Most people find singing in front of other people the most exposing thing that they can do - some find it downright frightening. This is because an individual's singing voice is the ultimate expression of who they are and is often very important to them. When asked why they want singing lessons, most individuals say that they "want to find their voice" and this is more about who they are as a person, than the singing itself, with often profound implications for a person's confidence and self-esteem.
Getting staff to work together by singing in harmony as a choir, not only pushes them initially out of their comfort zone (as people are often nervous and embarrassed when asked to sing in an environment where they are not used to doing so), but they relax quickly and because everyone is in the same boat, they work together, concentrating their attention on the task in hand. That something beautiful and unexpected is then produced (often a first for some) is a great team-building experience.
As such, not only does singing together provide a wonderful experience for all, but is ultimately far more "bonding" as an activity than more mainstream team-building activities. Staff see different and unexpected aspects of their colleagues' personalities by working together on such a creative pursuit and in times of recession the added feel-good factor cannot be surpassed.
