Folk Singing Workshop
What happens on this workshop?
Folk has long been a popular form of music, and over the past few years has experienced something of a renaissance, with folk singers crossing over into the mainstream charts.
Having said this, folk is not as easy to sing as you may think. It takes some skill to sing a song with sixteen verses and no choruses or bridge in a way that remains entertaining throughout. There are also of course "stylists" within folk - ie, those who don't really sing, but speak on notes or purposefully use a country dialect to add to the atmosphere!
This workshop is about actually singing folk music, both traditional folk music and music that is folk inspired or "folky".
You will:
· listen analytically to some examples of various singers of the
genre;
· learn some of the vocal techniques used in folk singing;
learn how to sing a long, repetitive folk song in an expressive
way;
work on some folk songs that are sung in harmony. These will
either be unaccompanied songs or songs that are accompanied
by guitar;
The workshop will also include an introduction to the voice and how it's produced, along with vocal exercises and demonstrations of singing and performing folk music.
Open to:
All aged 14 years and upwards (no upper age limit)
Fee
£40 per person

Folk Music: “A lovely pure folk voice reminiscent of Cara Dillon” Robert Hacker, Walliswood
‘I had a wonderful day at the folk singing workshop. It re-awakened my deep-rooted desire to sing that I have neglected for a few years. Learning breathing techniques and the nuances of tone and emphasis that can change a song so dramatically, has thoroughly inspired me to take singing much more seriously. Thank you Sharon.’ Gail Whitney
“Listening to Sharon singing folk songs is so inspirational - her voice is uplifting and makes me want to drop everything and go out to sing in the woods!” - Lesley Burnill, Walliswood
